PRINTING ON CANVAS: HOW IT WORKS |
|
Canvas Printing:
Giclée (zhee-‘clay) canvas prints are created using an inkjet printer. At our print studio, we load a large roll - up to 40 feet long - into our high-quality, Epson printer, and send the digital image of your artwork. The print head moves quickly back and forth, spraying a combination of inks that perfectly match the color of your image. This process can take anywhere from a couple minutes to close to an hour, depending on the size of your print!

Coating and Stretching:
Once printing is complete, your canvas print is easy to scratch. In order to keep your print like new, it is sprayed with a coating called ClearShield Canvas Guard, which protects your canvas from scratches and bumps (which are inevitable), and makes sure those beautiful colors stay bright and bold by adding UV-light protection (also present in the inks themselves). This will keep the colors from fading over time.
When the coating has dried, the canvas must be wrapped around a stretcher bar frame. The edges of the print are wrapped around and stapled to the back of a custom-made wooden frame, so no hardware is visible from the front or sides. Everything is pulled very tight so the canvas does not stretch out and sag over time.

Finishing:
Once stretched, your canvas enters the final step of the post-print process. Cloth tape will used on the back side to hide the rough edge of the cut canvas and the staples - this gives a clean, professional look and keeps the metal from scratching your wall. Felt or foam bumpers placed in each bottom corner, also to protect your wall.
Finally, hanging hardware is attached to the back. A sawtooth hanger is nailed or hammered into the top center of the frame for small pieces. Larger pieces have D-ring hooks screwed securely to each side, with strong picture hanging wire strung between them.
